Shattered

SHATTERED

This piece was created by an alginate mold of a woman’s face. The mold was then shaped and secured on the outer surface for stability with plaster cloth and filled with plaster.

A young woman who was once extremely beautiful; her physical appearance matched her mind and soul. She was brilliant and witty. Her compassionate spirit touched the hearts of many people. Unfortunately, although her kind and sensitive nature helped others, it was of no benefit to her. In fact, it was her weakness. Cruel people abused her generous mentality. Bad situations broke her down. She eventually lost faith that there was any genuine kindness at all. She became shattered by the world.

ImageImageA woman hiding from something. She may be afraid that people will see her true self, a person that she dislikes. As her own worst enemy, she is trapped and will never allow herself to be free. This is her poem . . .

THE SECRET ME

the secret me

no one can see

lonely tears

neurotic fears

the plastic smile

only lasts awhile

the secret me

that can’t be free

silent screams

neglected dreams

desperate cries

forbidden lies

the secret me

no one can see

disturbed desires

smoldering fires

hiding away

cannot stay

afraid you’ll see

the secret me

RAW VS. REFINED

RAW VS. REFINED

This piece stands on three legs, two old wrapping paper rolls and an old ax handle. A wooden dowel with hooks was placed in the center as a pole before the four objects were secured together with twine. A plastic lid was cracked in the center and placed over the dowel. Fabric was used to cover the plastic lid, making it look similar to a table. A postcard for the gallery exhibit Raw to Refined was changed to say “Raw VS. Refined” and placed on the table along with a green plastic carrot holding a real carrot in it’s mouth. Small wooden dowels were placed on the hooks of the large center dowel. The small dowels were evenly decorated with raw and refined objects, such as sliced a potato strung on wire and French fries.

This piece makes the viewer contemplate the ways in which we refine raw materials and for what purposes. The flimsy table top gives a feeling of uneasiness to that thought. In many instances, we take raw materials to create objects which are helpful to society and not harmful to the environment. However, too often we do the opposite by taking wonderful objects from nature and transforming them into products that are not healthy for people or the environment.
